Australia’s Premiere Celebration of Tap coming again to Melbourne on 29th September – 6th October 2018
The Australian Tap Dance Festival (ATDF) is about bringing the tap community and public together to learn, share, meet and enjoy all things tap.
The annual Australian Tap Dance Festival shuffles into Melbourne with a world class line-up of dancers arriving for Australia’s premiere celebration of tap from across Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the United States.
The Australian Tap Dance Festival is the only festival of its kind in Australasia and offers an action-packed week of tap and choreography introductions, master classes, jams, dance battles and competitions, group practices, seminars and special events for all ages and levels. The festival will run at one of Melbourne’s best arts venues, Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance.
This year’s Festival faculty features an exceptional line up of tap artists including international headliner Melinda Sullivan (SYTYCD USA Top 10, La La Land), Winston Morrison (founder of Melbourne Tap Dance and Australian Tap Dance Festival), Tyler Knowlin (current touring member of ‘Riverdance’), Jack Egan (founder & director of The Forge Tap Project), Peta Anderson (touring member of ‘Eireborne’), Brianna Taylor (one of Australia’s leading professional tap dance artists), Bill Simpson (choreographer, performer of USA & Australian tour of Strictly Gershwin), Shane Preston (teacher, choreographer and performer) and other special guest faculty. Each carefully selected faculty member will also be offering special 5-day residencies teaching full performance routines from 1- 5 October.
“The art of tap dance is always evolving and still thrives across the globe since its early American roots in the 1900’s,” says festival producer and dancer Ella Lehaf. “From childhood tap lessons and adult fitness classes to the world stage showmanship of ‘Tap Dogs’, ‘Riverdance’ and even ‘The Book of Morman’, tap dance continues to be rich with possibilities and new techniques which we aim to showcase at the festival,” says Ms. Lehaf.
This year’s line of up exciting events includes a free Never Tapped Before (beginners class), Talking Tap (faculty Q&A), Rhythm Creation (improvisation night with live jazz band), the Future of Tap presented by Capezio (artist showcase), Cutting Competition (tap battle), Learn the Famous Shim Sham and BS Chorus (lesson), free Lunchtime History Talks & Jams and the penultimate event, the Australian Tap Dance Festival Gala, showcasing the superb skills of a calvacade of international and Australian tap dancers.
What makes it special?
The ATDF selects a high calibre faculty from across Australia & around the world to fly in to conduct one jam-packed week of tap masterclasses, 5 day choreography residencies, and special events, ensuring there is something for everyone!

Are you a tap dancer?
There are masterclasses and 5-day residencies from beginner to advanced levels, for a range of ages.
The festival is a once-a-year chance in Australia to experience something different and expand your style and techniques at an accelerated rate, in a high immersion environment, in a short span of time.
The intensive nature, and access to our faculty artists at the top of their field, at this one place and time, plays a big part in the amazing experience you will enjoy at this festival.
Being surrounded by like minded people who love tap as much as you do will really give you a sense of belonging and family here at the festival.
..or do you just love watching dance?
We believe everyone should have the experience of the incredible feeling of watching and/or participating in tap dance.
There are public evening events to watch including the Tap Dance Film Night, Jam Night with live musicians, Cutting Contest, Capezio Dance Off and of course, the Festival Showcase.
If you’ve never tap danced before, there is a free public beginner class!
