What is a Residency?

A residency consists of 5 x 90 min classes that meet over 5 consecutive days allowing students to work progressively with their artist/s of choice, and learn a routine to perform at the Main Festival Show!

In addition to covering technique and drills, each residency will create a choreographed work that you will perform with that group at the main festival show on Friday (if you wish to!)

At the end of the five days you will have something tangible and memorable to walk away from the festival with.  As opposed to singe masterclasses you will build a deeper connection and relationship with your teachers and groups by doing residencies.

To get the most out of the festival, we encourage you to take as many of these residencies as possible (maximum of 4) as each teacher has their own gift, talent and style you can use to expand your tap style and repertoire.    It is something you will remember the most, long after the festival is over.

When you sign up for a residency, you will get to do intensive 90 minute classes each day for 5 days with the residency teacher(s) of your choice.

How long do all classes run for?

All classes will run for 90 minutes. This allows you to get the most value from the festival classes as opposed to your normal regular classes. This is the standard class duration for tap dancers learning at the world-renowned Broadway Dance Centre and Steps on Broadway studios in New York.

What level class should I take?

Years of tap experience:

7 years +  = ADVANCED

3 - 5 years  = INTERMEDIATE

1 - 2 years   = BEGINNER

If you are borderline and want a challenge go for the higher level.

If you want to be comfortable go for the lower level.

If unsure - alternatively you can do classes from both levels.

Whatever you decide will most likely end up being the right decision for you.

Rest assured that if the residency level is not suitable for you, on the day the teacher will advise you if necessary and you can be changed to a more suitable class.

Is there an age limit on classes?

Kids’ classes are generally primary-aged students.

Adults’ classes include teenagers and adults.

Overall there is no age limit – it is more about picking your class level appropriately.

if unsure contact us info@australiantapdancefestival.com.au

What is Kids level?

The kids’ class is for kids up to intermediate level.  Kids that are beginner-intermediate will also be ok in this class.

Advanced kids will probably be good to challenge themselves in the adult intermediate classes as well.

If the child is a beginner contact info@australiantapdancefestival.com.au for a suitable regular class for your child outside of the festival.    They are welcome to join the absolute beginners class workshop on Sunday lunchtime.

There doesn’t seem to be as many classes for Kids or Beginners?

Most beginners and kids will be well worked out by the end of a 90 minute session, where they can then take part in any free lunchtime sessions, and ticketed evening events.

What classifies as Adult beginners?

It is usually attended by those who have a little bit of tap experience, who have done it a long time ago, or not confident in fast progressing classes.

Any classes for absolute beginners (people who have never tapped before)?

There will be an ‘ABSOLUTE ADULT BEGINNERS’ class on Sunday lunchtime of the festival where you will get to do a group class (in normal shoes), to teach you some tap basics and give you a taste for tap.   If you wish to have suitable regular class that is suitable for your level outside the festival please contact ella@australiantapdancefestival.com.au.

What is the Jam Night?

This night open to all - it is an opportunity to express yourself through improvisation. Refer to the following video as an example:

I’m nervous about the jam (improvisation) night, any tips?

1) Use basic techniques. Use repetition.

2) Keep a pulse count in your head/count in your head.

3) Think of the sound first and let the movement be the result.

4) Sing your rhythms as you dance

5) Use other people's rhythms to give you ideas and expand on.

Look at this video to get some tips and the essence what improvisation is:

Everyone is encouraged to have a go, you are in the right place.  if you’d rather just enjoy or learn by watching that is totally fine.

No partial payments for residencies will be accepted.  Residencies MUST be attended from the first day (Monday), and preferably all the way until the fifth day (Friday).
